In Year 1, the children have been learning about the story of Handa’s Surprise. The children received a book, basket and letter from Handa. Questions were asked as to who Handa was. The children thought that Mrs De Garis might know - as she knows all of the children, but she explained that there were no children in our school with that name. The children had to help Handa solve a problem. Where did all her fruit go? The children then read the story and found the answers to these questions. During our ‘continuous provision’ sessions, the children have had further literacy, maths, topic and fine motor skills challenges all linked with the story. The classes have been ‘text mapping’ the story using Talk for Writing techniques and making actions to help them learn the story off by heart. Children have continued their learning at home by watching the animated version of the story to continue, to become familiar with the story and using their class text map to retell the story with their family. It has been an exciting half term of learning in Year 1. We hope you enjoy a few pictures of our learning!
